Churchill Downs Inc. acquired the Turfway Park racing facility in Florence, Kentucky. R2Architects was retained to design both the new ground up +/- 150,000 sf replacement entertainment facility to the original circa 1950’s Grandstand as well as to design the new +/- 42,000 sf extension facility to the Turfway Park nearby in Newport, Kentucky. The extension facility is known as Newport Racing & Gaming and includes an exciting lineup of entertainment venues consisting of: Historical Racing Machine (HRM) Facility, Simulcast Suite, Center Bar with food & beverage offerings as well as administrative offices and back-of-house support program.

The Newport Racing and Gaming Extension Facility’s design included the renovation of the existing building’s exterior façade and the complete demolition and fit-out of the interior spaces into an updated and contemporary entertainment center. The interior space features a modern design with tall open ceilings, accent lighting, flat panel display walls, and high contrasting interior finishes all making for a unique guest experience. The extension was designed as a stand-alone complex capable of maintaining and operating its day-to-day business operations. As part of its investment and presence into northern Kentucky, Churchill Downs will provide approximately 70 full time-equivalent jobs and is scheduled to open in 2020.
