The T-84 main battle tank entered service with Ukrainian Army in 1999

The T-84 is a Ukrainian main battle tank. It is a further development of the T-80UD. Development of the T-80UD began in the late 1980s. In the mid 1990s a contract was signed with Ukraine to supply 320 T-80UD tanks to Pakistan. After collapse of the Soviet Union fulfilling the contract was difficult due to disturbed nature of Soviet military industry. A number of T-80UD parts were produced in Russia and their acquisition was troublesome. Also Russia interfered politically and at the same time competed on international market with their new T-90 MBT. This forced to develop local capabilities in Ukraine, resulting in the T-84. This tank was revealed in 1995. It had a number of improvements over the previous T-80UD. It entered service with Ukrainian Army in 1999. Some sources report that only 6-10 of these tanks were delivered to Ukrainian armed forces. Ukrainian army never ordered this tank in large numbers due to funding problems and instead relied on their ageing T-64 main battle tanks and their upgraded versions. The only export operator is Pakistan that acquired 320 Ukrainian T-80UD MBTs. However these tanks were modified and had many features of the Ukrainian T-84, including new turrets. In most respect the T-84 is similar to the Russian T-90 MBT.

Vehicle has an all-welded turret and is fitted with built-in explosive reactive armor blocks. Protection is enhanced by Shtora-1 countermeasures system, significantly increasing tank's survivability against ATGW with semi-active or semi-automatic guidance.

The T-84 has similar weapons as the T-80UD. It is armed with a 125 mm smoothbore gun, fitted with an autoloader. This MBT is also compatible with the 9K119M Refleks (Western reporting name AT-11 Sniper-B) anti-tank guided missiles. These missiles are launched in the same manner as ordinary rounds. Effective range of fire with APFSDS round is 2 000-3 000 m day and 2 000-2 600 at night. Armor penetration is about 590-630 mm at 2 000 m range.

Secondary armament consists of coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun and a roof-mounted 12.7 mm heavy machine gun.

This main battle tank is powered by a 6TD-2 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 1 200 hp. Some variants of the T-84 are powered by a more powerful 6TD-3 turbocharged diesel, developing 1 500 hp. Auxiliary gas turbine power unit is fitted to power all the tank's systems, when the main engine is turned off. The T-84 has a deep wading kit, and a built-in self-entrenching blade.

Models of the T-84 include the T-84U MBT with new armored side skirts, built-in Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armor, muzzle reference system and some other improvements.

Variants

Oplot is an improved version of the T-84 fitted with a new turret. Sometimes it is referred as T-84 Oplot. It was officially adopted in 2000. A small number of these MBTs is in service with Ukrainian Army.

Yatagan is a prototype main battle tank, intended for export. It is a further development of the Oplot, featuring a 120 mm gun, compatible with the standard NATO tank munitions and special version of the Russian AT-11 Sniper anti-tank guided missiles. It has a new turret with ammunition stored in a separate compartment in the turret bustle with blow-out panels. This model also has a new autoloader.

Oplot-M, fitted with new Duplet (Nozh-2) explosive reactive armor that protects against tandem warheads.
